Industry Spotlight

Key articles from across the web on a variety of construction industry topics

For Whom the Road Tolls

Trump’s Infrastructure Plan Heading for Texas-Sized Roadblock Over Toll Roads via The Dallas Morning News
One of the key components of the Trump administration’s plans to build more domestic infrastructure is to rely on investment from the private sector to get the projects done. The roadways that get built by these public-private partnerships (P3) would typically become toll roads, with the revenue generated from the tolls used to pay the private investors back for their investment. There’s just one problem: “‘That’s not going to fly here in Texas,’” according to the director of Texans for Toll-Free Highways. Apparently, the Texas Legislature agrees with the group, since they slammed the door on any new public-private partnerships earlier this year. Seems like we’ve got a real Texan standoff on our hands…

The Devil Went Down to Georgia, Looking for a House He Could Lien

‘Super Liens’ No Longer a Super Threat to Georgia Homeowners via The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In a process that the AJC calls, “mind-numbingly complex,” some unscrupulous investors in the Atlanta area were combining tax liens with mechanics lien judgements to create “super liens” and snatch houses away from financially distressed homeowners. The Georgia Supreme Court put an end to the practice in a decision handed down in May, 2017.
